batik art

(Dries van Noten spring 2010 RTW)
Eversince seeing the batik prints strutted on this year's world runway again, I was reminded of how indonesian textile industry has beautiful design and diversity. Nowadays, traditional wax paint has also been supported by modern luxw textile printing. Moreover, if you take a look at current batik development, designers, from local to international, have come up with contemporary look that gives you well polished vibe. They realized majority of younger generation no longer have fancy interest on traditional "kebaya",  but by giving it a total new look, batik art can still be preserved.

In conjuction of this year's batik day, Roxy Indonesia launches batik themed collection as their part of high summer women collection. Their new take on batik is to modify the traditional textile into fashionable garments. Embracing wearable design and comfortable material, they transform the typical garment to today's fashion essential.

Miss Deta from Roxy Indonesia kindly send me two pieces of their collection and here are my fashion experiment with batik.

Roxy trapeze tunic. Zara navy mini skirt. Cotton on cardigan. Topshop tights. Zara belt and black boots

it has contrasting colour (reversed) on the left side

Introducing one of the Indonesian traditional batik pattern, called Mega Mendung ("Rain Cloud") they modify the curvy lines with bright colour and gradation

Roxy batik shirt. Stradivarius leather shorts. unbranded cream jacket. Steve Madden shoes

try to wear it as outerwear

another interesting pattern is the Kawung or the palm tree with eclipse-shaped fruit.

Tips for wearing batik
1. select the prints and colour that match your skin tone.
Nowadays, batik is not only available in brown or amber colour, but brighter colours or more fancy prints can be included in your option. Smaller prints work better on plus size body and vice versa.
2. Mix and match texture of fabric
You can choose cotton shirt with chiffon skirt or probably cotton and leather on the go.
3. Freshen up your look by combining it with latest trend
Top your batik piece with leather, camel coat, or even military inspired pieces. Experiment and let everyone go gaga.

So, what is your take on batik art? :)

love the mega mendung! as far as i remember mega mendung is usually positioned vertically, but it's interesting that yours is horizontal. It's cuter that way i think. Like the color!

and yes, I stay in singapore too! Shall we follow each other? <3 followed you, btw.
